Autumn Team Racing at Westbere Lakes
A small but determined fleet of ten teams met on the first properly chilly day of the autumn for a team racing event hosted by King's Canterbury.
In busterly and difficult conditions racing was of a high quality with some resulting close matches. Initially in two leagues of five each teams raced 4 races before being organised into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets for the knock-out stage. Emerging strongly in the early stages were Ardingly, Norwich and King's 1, they were joined by Sevenoaks in the Gold fleet. The Suffolk teams, Ipswich and RHS, and the Kent teams, KSSA and King's 2 made up the Silver fleet. The final pairing of Ardingly 2 and Winchester kept each other company in the Bronze Fleet.
The final rounds saw Ardingly 1 and King's 1 into the final with Ardingly winning in the best of three. RHS and Ipswich making it to the Silver final, but even the threat of walking home wasn't enough to persuade RHS to relinquish the win to Ipswich!. Winchester won out over Ardingly 2, which made Ardingly both the overall winner and loser at the event.
Thanks to both the Westbere Club and King's for hosting the event.

BSDRA Eastern Region Regatta at Rutland Water 21st May 2011Sailed in superb conditions at Rutland water with 12 teams from around the region. Oakham hosted the event with help from Rutland Sailing Club and Uppingham School.
The 12 teams sailed in three round robin groups using two flights of boats. The group stages were closely fought with only one team, Norwich, succeeding in winning all its first round matches. Oakham and Uppingham, also both won their groups and Rutland Raiders finished fourth at this stage. Teams then sailed in Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets, with Norwich again coming top in their group closely followed by Oakham. With one flight of boats out of order the Silver sail off was cancelled but Norwich and Oakham sailed for the Gold Trophy in a best-of-three play off. Norwich won the first but lost the second in a very closely fought race, which really tested the umpires to the full. In the final race, Norwich pushed too hard at the start and two boats were over, effectively finishing their chances. Oakham then closed the door on Norwich to win the Gold trophy 2-1.
Thanks to Alastair Spears and the Oakham Team for organising the event.

BSDRA Southern Area Championships 21
May 2011, 1030 to 1730
Held as in previous years at Spinnaker SC in the New Forest,
entry was restricted to 12 teams sailing in three flights of fireflies. Present
were Winchester, Canford, Clifton, Sherborne, Bryanston and Millfield from the
Southern Area, plus Magdalen, Eton, Tonbridge, Claire Court, Wellington and King’s. Weather conditions were perfect
with Force 3 wind and sunny spells. Umpiring was led by internationally
accredited David Steele supported by other experienced umpires /teachers.
A round-robin of three leagues of four schools led into a
second round-robin of Gold, Silver and Bronze leagues. The top two in each
league then went into 3-race finals.
MCS saw off King’s in the Gold final, with perfect 1-2-3
performances in both races, thus winning the Francis-Beharrall trophy.
Sherborne beat Tonbridge 2-0 in the Silver final, so becoming the Southern Area
champions. Claire Court came back from
one race down to beat Millfield in the Bronze final.
Complete results were:

The range of abilities was great. Pre-seeding with the aid
of BSDRA data reduced the number of severely one-sided races. Restricted entry
allowed 50% of the time on the water. Top class umpiring prevented dissent.
Support from Spinnaker SC kept the boats operational and was greatly
appreciated.

22 Teams travelled to Bough Beech for the BSDRA SE Championships (The Hoad Shield) on Saturday 14th May. Away from its usual early season spot, the Hoad attracted teams from as far afield as Ipswich, Norwich and Royal Hospital School.
A stunning WNW F3 welcomed the teams and while there was some initial concern that Cutdowns would be required, the wind played ball and other than a few localised shifts, the weather could not have been better for an event at Bough Beech.
Racing was at times close; at times one sided and other than a few breakdowns early in the day, racing continued apace with ninety three races being completed in a shade under six hours.
Sevenoaks 1 triumphed over Wellington A in the first of the Semi Finals, with MCS 1 beating RGS in the other.
A close fought first of the three race final suggested that racing would go to the wire; however MCS 1 continued their unbeaten ways in the 2nd of the finals races to reach a very well deserved first Hoad Shield Victory.

Sailed in bright sunshine and a consistent 15-18 mph breeze (E) on Westbere lakes, near Canterbury, 14 teams sailed in two mini leagues to qualify for the gold, silver and bronze fleet finals. League B final order:
Magdalen College School, Uppingham, Ardingly, Wellington, Kent Schools SA, King’s B, Sevenoaks B.
Semi-Finals:
Bronze fleet: Rugby (w) v King’s B; Kent Schools SA (w) v Haileybury.
Silver fleet: Ardingly (w) v King’s A; Wellington (w) v Tonbridge.
Gold fleet: Sevenoaks A (w) v Uppingham; Norwich (w) v MCS.
Finals:
Bronze fleet: Kent Schools SA (w) v Rugby.
Silver fleet: Wellington (w) v Ardingly.
Gold fleet: (best of three races) Norwich (w) v Sevenoaks A.
We enjoyed good sailing throughout all the afternoon in 52 races and all teams are to be congratulated upon their excellent participation, enthusiasm and keenly contested team racing. Many of the races, including bronze and silver finals, were decided by just one point. Many Congratulations to Norwich School on their fine victory in the first BSDRA championship of the 2011 season.
